Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields was playing well for the team, starting the first six games of the season while Russell Wilson recovered from a calf injury. Fields’ strong play led many to believe he would remain the team’s quarterback even when Wilson was healthy, but it does not sound like that’s the case.
According to a report from Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, Russell Wilson is healthy and will replace Justin Fields as the team’s starter this week.
“Sources: The Steelers plan to give Russell Wilson first-team reps in practice this week, putting him in line to make his season debut and start Sunday night against the Jets,” Pelissero said in a post on X.
“Pittsburgh is 4-2 with Justin Fields. But Wilson’s calf is fully healed and now he gets his shot.”
With Fields leading the way, the Steelers have a 4-2 record and are tied for sixth place in the AFC North.
So far this season, Fields has thrown for 10 touchdowns with just one interception in those games.
Needless to say, this is a pretty shocking decision considering how well Fields has played for the Steelers this season, and it sparked a lot of reactions on social media.
“Completely inexcusable. Coaching malpractice. Justin Fields is 4-2 and has 10 TD’s and 1 INT in 6 games. He has done nothing to warrant a QB change. Totally disagree with this decision,” one fan wrote on X.
“I do not understand this at all,” NFL analyst Benjamin Solak of ESPN wrote in a post.
“Dumbest thing you could do with the young guy playing well,” another fan added.
“Excuse me… HOW do u make this decision. The Steelers just scored over 30 points in the first time in what feels like years,” another fan said.
“I’ve never seen a QB more disrespected in NFL history than Justin Fields,” another fan added.
“Not a fan of this. Russ is a one-year rental on a cheap deal. No harm if he never sees the field, and as long as the Steelers are above .600, he shouldn’t. Don’t pull back on the guy who has a chance to be the future for the team just to placate someone’s ego,” a fan said.
Clearly, this is a shocking decision, and people are not necessarily happy about it.
