Perez senior, a Mexican politician, had mocked Schumacher during an outburst against his son’s critics. His remarks included questions about Schumacher’s identity, referencing his recently announced sexuality and asking if the German is “a journalist, a woman or a man.”
In response, 49-year-old Schumacher struck a conciliatory tone, saying he understood the emotions involved in defending a son. “I would also stand 100 percent behind my son and try to help,” he said. “As for the style, I would approach it differently, but we know Mr Perez with all his emotions. That’s why I’m not angry with him.”
Speaking in Las Vegas ahead of this weekend’s race, Sergio Perez made it clear that he does not share his father’s views.
“I don’t agree with any of my father’s comments,” the Red Bull driver stated. “My father made a mistake, and I don’t share any of his views. But ultimately, I can’t control what he says. I can only answer for my words.”
Perez emphasised the importance of setting a good example in the world of motorsport. “I think the only thing that matters in sport is what happens on the track. We have to be an example to the rest of the world,” he added.
Looking ahead to the Las Vegas GP, Perez also expressed optimism about driving a Red Bull car with the same specifications as his teammate, Max Verstappen.
“As far as I know, this weekend I will be driving the same car that Max has had in the last races,” he revealed. “This gives me optimism and confidence that everything will go well this time.”
